PRESIDENT'S DESK

Your support is highly valued as 2026 begins

Dr Kyle Hoath

AMA (WA) President

It is a great time of year in our great State, and this edition of Medicus finds us at a point between the festive season and a brand-new year. So, firstly, let me wish you some proper rest and relaxation with those you care about, however that looks for you at this time of year. If you are working through the period, please take adequate care to protect your own health and safety, both physically and mentally.

I don’t need to tell you that 2025 has had its challenges, and I have become thoroughly acquainted with many of them since taking on the role of President halfway through the year. The reverberations of these challenges are being felt now, as we see significant movement and change in both the public and private systems.

I have invested a lot of time and the weight of office in this privileged role in dealing with various aspects of hospital performance and the desperate need to improve the conditions in our emergency departments to ensure patient flow and timely care.

It seems remarkable that it was only the beginning of October when I appeared with other health union bosses to present a Five-Point Plan to tackle ambulance ramping. We were united in our message that we simply couldn’t have another winter like the one just passed. Since then, the Government has put some $1.5 billion into various projects in its Building Hospitals Fund. I think it’s a fair indication of their understanding of our messaging. But, of course, we need to start seeing results; and seeing them relatively quickly.

“ We support all private practitioners to have viable services and understand this is a difficult time for you. We will act in your interests and do our best to ensure there are outcomes for both sectors.

The extent of our plight was evident in data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showing WA had the worst ED wait times in the country last financial year. The median wait time in WA was 44 minutes – more than double the national median of 18 minutes. Only 46% of West Australians who presented to EDs were seen on time, compared to 67% nationally.

Whatever the factors behind this, and there are many in a large state like ours, it is a problem begging for solutions. I have been clear in my belief that you look for all of them. Not just money – but innovative approaches, any synergies, communication, ideas that turn the dial. Because we aren’t turning it right now. Ramping levels and the like hover at similar levels to those from previous years for the most part.

So, I was pleased to see an AI trial coming to Royal Perth Hospital for next winter to streamline workflows and improve bed availability. The technology will schedule key tasks such as medical imaging, laboratory tests, pharmacy medication packs, and preparing discharge summaries, helping hospitals to coordinate care more efficiently. We must move with the times.

We don’t need to hand over all our work to technology and must not, but equally must harness it to help in providing solutions. Let’s see how that trial works, and if it can be implemented across the health landscape.

There have been large shifts in the private health space, with private hospitals selectively cutting lists that are less profitable. It is leading to greater negotiation than normal between the public and private owners, but it is our members caught in this cycle. We support all private practitioners to have viable services and understand this is a difficult time for you. We will act in your interests and do our best to ensure there are outcomes for both sectors, which are vital to the health and wellbeing of all Western Australians.

To that end, we will be starting negotiations in 2026 for a new Industrial Agreement. Our current agreement is delivering pay increases and permanency for many doctors. We will continue to fight for your pay and conditions. It’s a privilege to take up this work. I thank all of you for your membership of our great organisation, and look forward to interacting with you this year as we continue to take up these challenges. Here’s to a productive and fruitful year ahead.
