Making a racket in the media

Martin Turner

Editor, Medicus

Dr Kyle Hoath with West Australian Health/Medical Report winner, John Flint.

Dr Kyle Hoath was on stage to present the Health/Medical Report Award at the 2025 West Australian Media Awards gala dinner on Saturday 8 November at Novotel Langley.

The award, proudly sponsored by the AMA (WA), went to John Flint from The Sunday Times for ‘The Great Dental Racket’.

John’s story concerned the collapse of a leading Perth dental practice when its principal dentist and sole director died, leaving more than 130 dental patients in financial and physical pain – with many having paid thousands of dollars for implants and other dental treatments, and having received only partial or no treatment.

Finalists were Connor McGoverne – from 9News, WAtoday and 6PR – for ‘Buying Nangs as Easy as Ordering Uber Eats Despite Tough New Laws’, and Caitlyn Rintoul, from The West Australian, for ‘Left Waiting: The Failure of WA’s Sexual Assault Services’.

Congratulations to John and his fellow finalists, and many thanks to the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance who organise the Awards.

It’s an opportunity to thank the media for their interest in our activities this year. As the largest independent professional organisation for medical practitioners and medical students in the State, the AMA (WA) has a privileged position in which our views are often sought on health and medical matters.

This year, we’ve had the transition from Immediate Past President Dr Michael Page to President Dr Kyle Hoath, who are both adept media performers. It is by no means an easy task. You need to have control of your subject matter, then convey it effectively, often at short notice, in the hope your message is received in the way it was intended.

We hope that you, our AMA (WA) members, have been able to engage with the media this year and see your representatives advocating on your behalf, providing an authoritative voice in the community.

We look forward to a productive 2026.
