MEDIA MATTERS

AMA (WA) in the Media

At the AMA (WA), we take pride in being a strong voice for doctors, patients, and the healthcare system as a whole. Over the past two months, the AMA (WA) has been in the media, speaking up on relevant issues like the Government’s $1.5 billion Building Hospitals Fund. Here’s a look at some of our most significant media appearances.

HIGHLIGHTS

CHANNEL 10 NEWS

Blood test needles used for diabetes awareness exercise

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to Channel 10 News about reports that multiple students had used the same needle to test their blood as part of a diabetes awareness exercise at a primary school in Perth’s south. Parents are encouraged to get their children in for a blood test and to follow health advice.

2025 WEST AUSTRALIAN MEDIA AWARDS

Health/Medical Report Award

Dr Kyle Hoath was on stage to present the Health/Medical Report Award at the 2025 West Australian Media Awards. The award, proudly sponsored by the AMA (WA), went to John Flint from The Sunday Times for ‘The Great Dental Racket’. John’s story concerned the collapse of a leading Perth dental practice when the principal dentist and sole director of the practice died, leaving more than 130 patients in financial and physical pain – with many having paid thousands of dollars for implants and other dental treatments, and having received only partial or no treatment.

A different lens on health-related films

Our Communications and Media Manager, Martin Turner, reviewed two recent health-related films screened at Luna Palace Cinemas – Prime Minister and Die My Love.

Building Hospitals Fund

We welcomed the Cook Labor Government’s announcement of its commitment to significant new hospital projects as part of the $1.5 billion Building Hospitals Fund – which Dr Kyle Hoath said was a direct response to the AMA (WA)’s sustained advocacy for greater hospital capacity and investment in new infrastructure.

HIGHLIGHTS

Facebook

High-performing Facebook posts for the October-November period highlighted two outstanding achievements by AMA (WA) members.

Dr Haseeb Riaz was announced as WA’s Young Australian of the Year with Gareth Shanthikumar – as co-founders of the educational service MAN UP. They have reached thousands of students to address the root causes of poor mental health and gender-based violence. This post gained 78,196 views and 488 interactions.

Dr Shev Dias, who is studying a Doctor of Medicine at UWA, became a Rhodes Scholar and will be heading to Oxford University in October 2026. Congratulations, Shev! The post had 28,363 views and 135 interactions.

Linkedin

Our best-performing LinkedIn posts highlighted the advocacy work that the AMA (WA) does on behalf of its members. President Dr Kyle Hoath, CEO Dr Bennie Ng, and General Manager of Policy & Communications Jeremy Lee visited the State Health Operations Centre to see how they bring together key agencies to manage hospital demand and optimise capacity across our vast State.

This post reached 3,109 people, with 254 engagements. A post about Dr Kyle Hoath, Dr Bennie Ng and Jeremy Lee’s meeting with Kate Chaney MP, Federal Member for Curtin, was seen 3,164 times, with 172 engagements.
