Dr YES member bound for Oxford

Dr Shev Dias has won a Rhodes Scholarship Australia-at-Large.

AMA (WA) member Dr Shev Dias has become a Rhodes Scholar and plans to head to Oxford University in October 2026.

Dr Dias, who studied a Doctor of Medicine at The University of Western Australia, was recently chosen to progress to Rhodes Scholarship national selection before being awarded a Rhodes Scholarship Australia-at-Large.

Dr Dias plans to take up an internship at Royal Perth Hospital prior to the commencement of his studies.

Over the last six years Shev has volunteered for, and helped to coordinate, the AMA (WA)’s Dr YES program. It was in fact a Dr YES friend who asked him if he was applying for the scholarship.

“I wasn’t aware of it, and then looked into it and realised I ticked off the four main criteria for the scholarship,” Shev said.

“So I realised I could do a Doctor of Philosophy in orthopaedic surgery research, which is my passion; my specialty that I want to do in the future. From there, I guess the more you look at the application, the more you think about it, the more you fall in love with it, and the more you want it to become a reality. That was the motivation I used to keep the application going, and thankfully it worked out.”

Besides the many rewarding aspects of Dr YES, such as influencing WA youth towards positive health outcomes and the mentoring he has received from fellow members who are now doctors, it also led him to the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, which he now plays at an elite level, representing the top WA team and competing in national and international tournaments.

“ Demonstrating leadership, humility and a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of young people, Shev was a valued member of the Dr YES community for the last six years.

“It actually started off through friends I made in senior years from Dr YES, and we have a social team. Then before you know it, I’m training five times a week and heading off to Nationals,” Dr Dias said.

Former Dr YES team leader Dr Henry Pemberton congratulated Shev on his achievement and reflected on his contributions to the organisation.

“Demonstrating leadership, humility and a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of young people, Shev was a valued member of our community for the last six years,” he said.

“His efforts as a coordinator were pivotal to Dr YES being recognised with the 2022 Y WA Collective Action Award from the Youth Affairs Council of WA, celebrating a youth organisation that provides meaningful social impact. Shev’s enthusiasm, drive for continuous improvement, and promotion of an inclusive and fun Dr YES culture has been instrumental to the strong place in which the program finds itself today. On behalf of Dr YES and the AMA (WA) Foundation, I wish Shev the very best as he pursues a PhD at Oxford University.”
