MERCEDES-BENZ e-CLASS

HIGH TECH AND COMFORT IN AN IMPRESSIVE PACKAGE

For 2025, Mercedes-Benz has launched an all-new E-Class, bringing major changes to the best-selling compact sedan range. The aim has been to create a smaller version of the company’s ultra-luxurious and technologically advanced large S-Class. They seem to have achieved this well, with the new E-Class embodying high-tech and comfort in equal measures. And the result is a thoroughly impressive car.

It’s built in several versions, different engines and levels of fittings. The model tested by Medicus was the E300, presently the top-of-the-line model in Australia. For $90,400, the buyer gets a 4-cylinder, turbocharged 2-litre engine which produces 190kW. Additionally there’s 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, giving extra power and torque as well as fuel saving, energy recovery, and stop-start functions.

This is an excellent and economical powertrain; and mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission giving impressive, smooth performance. Handling and roadholding are excellent and confidence inspiring. At speeds up to 60km/h, the 2.5 degrees of rear wheel steering aids maneuverability.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class excels, with an impressive dashboard and the highest levels of comfort and technology.

The interior is where the new E-Class excels the most. Both comfort levels and technology are of the highest order. The first to impress is the expansive dashboard, which is effectively two large screens. After a week’s use, it made the smaller screens in most other modern cars seem inadequate.

As for fitments, it’s hard to think of anything else an owner could want. Without going into extensive detail here, the E300 is loaded with every electronic aid for safety and convenience available on the market. The tech is dazzlingly impressive, without resorting to tricks (as per Tesla). The options list is small and mostly covers aesthetic choices.

As has long been traditional for Mercedes-Benz, the E-Class looks very similar to the larger S-Class models. The current styling is pleasing, and the reviewed car drew positive comments, particularly from Mercedes-Benz owners.

Many car makers save their highest specification for their biggest car – which means anyone wanting a more compact vehicle misses out or pays a lot for options, for which one generally gets nothing back at resale. The new E-Class addresses this, and it provides big-model levels of equipment and driving experience.

The new range comes with a five-year warranty. With price rises, the new E-Class models start at $76,500 and the coming AMG performance models will be more than double that figure.

Decades ago, Mercedes-Benz used to build the best car they could, and the price would reflect that. Then came an era where they priced their products against those of other makers, and quality reduced.

Perhaps we’re seeing them go back to their old ways. It’s a lot of money. But if you’re after the best compact sedan on the market, the new E-Class is the answer.
